Since last week’s post was all about headshots, including awesome tips and tricks from a casting director and a top photographer (click here if you missed it), I thought I’d share some insights from my own latest actor headshot session - just over a week ago - with the awesome Lauren Toub.
If you’re like me, you’re usually pretty nervous when it’s time to get new pics. The preparation, the expense, (the vanity!), and then actually picking 1 - 3 photos that will represent you for the next few years can be a bit daunting, to say the least.
This year, I wanted to arrive at my shoot prepared, confident, and open to collaboration. I hoped for an easy, fun afternoon where I could let go of my attachment to the outcome of the shots. I’m happy to report I pretty much accomplished this, and I know a lot of it has to do with the work I did beforehand. I’ve written down my 10-step process in a free list for you, in case you’d like to give it a try next time you need new headshots! Here’s a sampling of some of the tips:
Make a special effort not to skip any workouts for a couple of weeks before your shoot date. Moving your body every day can help you feel strong and confident - a great way to feel when you arrive at your headshot session.
About a week before your shoot, make sure your nutrition is on point (lots of fruits and vegetables, lean protein, and no sugar or alcohol). Then, about two days before your shoot, cut out salt and add plenty of veggies like asparagus that act as natural diuretics to get rid of any excess water weight. :)
It’s always a good idea to revisit your career goals - especially right before a headshot session! Think about the kinds of roles you want to play in the next couple of years, including what media you want to work in. Write them down, as you’ll need them for the next steps.
